While I would love to be able to go into stores and try things on, they make it impossible for me by refusing to carry size 12s. (Even companies like Aerosoles, Nine West, and JCrew, which actually do have 12s online [hurray!], don't stock them in the shops.) Zappos and their free shipping/returns are a godsend. Plus, if you're trying a pair on at home, you can make sure it goes with your outfit!

QuiteLight, places like Zappos and Endless.com offer free return shipping...so there's no risk in ordering shoes and trying them on. If they pinch, rub, or squish, you send them back and all is well. Clothes are another story and far trickier, however...

This is a question that's been tormenting me: how on earth can you buy shoes (or clothes) on-line without trying them on & knowing how they feel/fit/look on you?

I HATE uncomfortable shoes, and while I have fairly small, nicely shaped feet for my height (5'10", size 8.5-9), I still reject a lot of shoes for pinching, rubbing, or squishing my toes.

Am I missing something?

Great shoes! I adore Zappos.com, and can waste hours and hours on their site. My wishlist is endless.
