Oh January, you are not my favorite month. April may be the cruelest according to our pal T.S. Eliot (what? Like only Francesca’s allowed to be smart? I have erudition up the wazoo!) but January, you are the brokest. So what do we do when we’re broke? Do we charge up a storm on our credit cards? Mais non! We go shopping in our own closets.
Your challenge this week is to come up with something from your own closet that you can wear in new and interesting ways and come back and post the details.
Experiment with accessories, try on odd combinations or use an old fashion trick and wear a favorite sweater back to the front with an interesting necklace, go crazy!
Just remember: if you love it, you can work it.
Yay! Great challenge. Just last night, as I was attempting to go to sleep, I was considering my wardrobe and what I could wear today that wouldn’t be “business as usual.” It inspired me to do a “closet cleanout,” since I couldn’t recollect all the items in my closet, and I was unsure if some items still fit.
BTW – I decided, for the first time since 1982, to tuck my shirt in. I’m totally short-waisted, so I usually have a slightly “Erkle” look when I do this. The pants are slightly low-slung and my shirt is a verticle pin-stripe, so my short-waisted torso looks normal. I added a shiney black ribbon for a belt (I really should get a business belt – my step-dad’s brown leather “Masons” belt doesn’t cut it for Mondays) and voila! Also, broke out my black pointy-toed shoes per Manolo’s Trends for 2008 Part 1.

I got so many new outfits last month that rather than shopping in my own closet, I spent yesterday cleaning it out and hauling big garbage bags full of clothes out to the garage to await a trip to Goodwill or a yard sale. Like Leah, as I was attempting to sleep last night, I was also contemplating my wardrobe, but it was more like, “I have so many new choices in my closet right now! Which should I wear tomorrow? The mind reels!”

I saw I Am Legend and could not sleep, you know, so as not to be eaten by the feral plague cannibal type people. I, too, spent the evening in my closet sorting and inspecting.
The fantastic find was a gorgeous black Dana Buchman skirt I’d forgotten I had. It’s a size too small now, but that means when I put it on I have a sexy black pencil skirt instead of the more conservative fit it used to have. With some pointy-toed kitten heels, a floofy top, and a new necklace, I’m holding my own against the awfully grey Monday we’re having.
I also found some gorgeous lingerie and Halloween costume bits, so I did my closet sorting in sexy French things and a giant feather boa. It’s a real one fit for a lounge singer–none of this puny craft store business for me!

Sara – you crack me up!! I would probably do more cleaning if I had a costume to go with it. :-D
