Big Girls in Art: Rachel Deacon
By Francesca
Here we have the lovely pear-shaped “Reclining Woman With Flowers” by Rachel Deacon.
Francesca asks: What is this woman looking at and what is she thinking?
(A poster print of this painting is available from the superfantastic Barewalls.com here!)

Hmmm, I think there is a very hunky guy off stage left with two glasses of wine.

She’s looking at her lover(s) and thinking, “Damn, that/those boy(s) are about to get damn lucky!”

She is a singer reclining on a baby grand piano and watching a group of “too thin” model types who just walked into her territory and are trying to flirt with the guys at the bar. She is smiling to herself because she never had to work that hard to get any man she ever wanted and she is have amused and half saddened by their need to conform to a stereotypical image of women.
