FYI: A full-grown male swan can break the arm of a full-grown male human with its wing. Makes Leda and the Swan a bit of an eye-opener, no?

Spent it sleeping until awakened by noisy screaming kids. Get off my lawn!

Went to a house party with wonderful friends and family at the home of some friends at the beach. It was about 0 degrees outside with high winds, but the fireplace, wonderful food, great conversation, wine, champagne and laughter chased away the chill. I always say that you should spend NYE in a way that reflects how you would like the new year to play out. If so, then my 2009 will be warm and wonderful. Happy New Year to all!

I worked until 5pm. Mr Carol and I went to church, then had two couples over for dinner - beef tenderloin and swordfish on the grill, yum! Toasted ourselves and each other at midnight and settled down for a two hour session of catch-phrase. Haven't laughed that hard in ages! NY's Day we spent mostly on the couch, though he had to make a run to Sears to pick up a new garage door opener. Why do they always break on a cold holiday???

Forget what I did New Year's Eve. (Come to think of it, I already have.) The only reason I'm bringing my gin-soaked fingers to type right now is to say THANK GOD I'VE FOUND SOMEONE WHO AGREES THAT SWANS ARE, INDEED, BASTARDS. I once had the terrifying experience of watching two male swans battle each other on the Cam during mating season. Now, while I'm the first person who'll gladly bear witness to a testosterone powered grudge match, it's just not the same when the bipeds duking it out have webbed toes and wings. Placid as swans seem, there is no sound more blood-curdling than the throaty bleating released when two male swans crash into one another at full force and speed. (Should I be getting turned on while I write this? Meh. I'm going to hell for last year's antics, anyhow. May as well start out 2009 right.)

I did the typical New Year's Eve plan for any big city...went out to a bar with some friends, drank a little too much, made a lot of noise at midnight, and then stumbled home (on the metro - this is why I love big cities. no need to involve any vehicles, therefore no need to stay sober).

It was freezing in DC, as it always is this time of year, and yesterday we had a particularly chilling wind blowing. So I dressed sensibly in nice jeans, a sparkly sweater, and flats that I can discretely wear socks with. Then I sat back and enjoyed watching all the ridiculous girls who thought it was a good idea to wear tiny little dresses with bear legs and no sweater. And I laughed at them in my head.

I spent it in holey yoga pants and a t-shirt drinking cava with my mom on her first night in her new house. It wasn't exciting, but I've had enough excitement for a while, thankyouverymuch.

We had a death in the family over the holidays and only just got back to our home last night. We unloaded the car, had dinner, and the toddler and I went to bed. My husband stayed up to de-stress on the Internet. We thought about having a drink and just never got around to it.

Bye, 2008. Don't let the door hit you on the butt on your way out. :p

(Although, really: my family never really "did" NYE. It's not a holiday I think about celebrating in general.)
