Crystal Renn!

Francesca is so happy!

The beautiful and ubiquitous “plus-size” model Crystal Renn, 22, has a multi-page feature in the May issue of Harper’s Bazaar! The message of the spread: “Be Proud. Embrace the feminine beauty of the curve.”

Francesca wishes that plus-size models could appear in Harper’s without any “Be proud” commentary, just an understanding that the size 12 model (which isn’t even truly plus-size!) is at least as beautiful as any size-0 girl, but still.

Gorgeous photo of an unwearable shirt! Curvy girls have hit the mainstream!

The dappled light on her legs is unfortunate, but the Crystal is GORGEOUS.

Ms. Renn models for Lane Bryant, Torrid, and Evans, as well as Saks Fifth Avenue.

According to her Wikipedia entry, her book, Hungry, is due for release at the end of the year. Francesca will keep you updated!

  3. The lighting on her legs like that makes her look like she has my talent for walking into table corners, times a thousand.

  4. Did you see her swimsuit shoot in last month’s Glamour? Gorgeous, and I don’t recall there being one mention of the fact that she’s “plus-size”. It was just a regular fashion shoot.

  6. One of the things I find interesting is the progression of the plus size model. When I was modeling in my very early 20’s, the only plus size models who got any real work were the mom types, because the only work was for mom-type catalogs. Being “too beautiful” or “too interesting” worked against you (my best friend Meghan, also a model, and I were often given that line).

So I’m glad to see that someone with interesting, aggressive beauty like Ms Renn is a success, and yet I can’t be entirely excited until there’s more than ONE plus size model that gets editorial work with any sort of consistency. First it was Emme who had the mom thing going, then it was Mia Tyler, now it’s Ms Renn. Apparently it’s like Highlander; there can be only one.

  7. What the hell ever happened to Kate Dillon, anyway? She was my absolute fave model, and you saw her all the time in the pages of Mode (RIP), but I’ve hardly seen her since.

  8. Plumcake, right on. And, snerk.

She is gorgeous, and has a great understanding of her angles. Bring on the book.

  9. I love the fact that she is toned but far from skinny! I work out with relative (ahem!) regularity, and am a shapely (ifahmaysaysomahself!) size 16… no interest whatsoever in being anything less that a 14 or so, cos I loooooove me my hips and a$$ and boobs… i just want to stay healthy and with some muscle tone. It helps that I have thrice the endurance of my skeeny-weeny friends too!

Uhm, and what is up with that picture posted by another poster, of Crystal in Glamor? Yes, yes, they just must airbrush, but who has armpits as smoooooth as Barbie’s? Give me a break!

  10. This post oddly reminds me of the kooky things I have to do just to feed my kids their breakfast when they were very young. (Open up for the airplane!)
