as one of the commenters on the previous post, and a former english major, I got that the original post was an attempt at satire. (I don't think it was the most successful attempt, but that's neither here nor there.)

I didn't take offense at the post itself but at some of the responses to it. And you know, I still take offense at the vitrol and classism that some commenters tossed around in the comments section. I'm not so sure that they realized it was satire--at least not from the "OMG yes! babies sux and how dare poor people breed near me!!" attitude that came across.

And that's why Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" should be required reading in high school.

Seriously, people. Do we not remember Plumcake's post about women who wear Disney sweatshirts and novelty socks? Biting satire is kind of her thing. If it's not your thing, well, you don't *have* to comment, no matter how compelled you feel to defend the absolute truth of your personal opinion.

I actually thought quite a few of the comments were funny, and others were very mature and insightful. Unfortunately, this being the internet, you can't expect every comment to be funny, mature, and/or insightful.

Yeah, that's why I checked out of the commets section while it was still funny. I've seen enough of the you-must-love-kids-or-you-don't-deserve-to-live/kids-are-tiny-satans (saten?)-who-should-be-locked-up-until-they're-old-enough-to-bring-me-a-drink threads to know what was coming.

It... really doesn't read as satire. It reads exactly like thousands of posts and comment threads on the Internet lamenting children's poor behavior in public places, with varying levels of justification for the indignation. It's over-the-top, but Plumcake is always over the top. And for what it's worth, because that's her style, I didn't mind the original post. It was the invitation to share stories and dark fantasies that left me thunderstruck, because I've read some of those other comment threads and I know where they go. And sure enough, that's where it went.
