Big Girls in Art: Picasso
By FrancescaFrancesca was recently at the Guggenheim museum in Manhattan and was captivated by this painting, Woman With Yellow Hair, by the Picasso:

Francesca is not the only one. Apparently the poster print of this painting is one of the best-selling ones at the museum gift shop.
Francesca visited the museum with her cousin, and she asked him: do you think the woman is sleeping, or crying? He says sleeping, and Francesca agrees, but she thinks maybe, maybe the woman is feeling sad. This is what touches Francesca about the work, that it evokes peacefulness, but also exhaustion and a teeny touch of depression, at the same time.
What say you?

I have this poster print rolled up in a lovely cardboard tube somewhere around here. I love her. I see the shading in purple and find it calm with a little undercurrent. I think she is slumbering and dreaming. And I love the circle of her arms – they say stay out while inviting you into her embrace.

Not depressed. She stayed up too late last night watching Project Runway. I know I did.
