Odds and Ends

catonscale.jpg1- Francesca has finally reached the point at which she is ready to get rid of her bathroom scale! The moment has come because Francesca has been exercising five times a week (nothing terribly fancy. She is a great fan of the  Walk Away the Pounds DVDs), and so she has gained 3 pounds … of muscle. So, what we have is a situation wherein Francesca feels amazing, and has better posture and more energy, but the scale says nothing meaningful. Bye bye Mr. Clunky Machine! From now on Francesca pays attention to her body, not to you!

2- Francesca has provided useful tips in the past regarding makeup, laundry, etc. Now she needs advice from her internet friends! Francesca is in possession of an old coffee grinder which previously belonged to her beloved grandmere, who died about a year ago. It is basically a plain wooden box with a metal grinder up top, which one fills through a little hole and then turns by hand; the ground beans fall into a dear little wooden drawer at the bottom. Very old-school, and with great sentimental value to Francesca, because her grandmother used it for decades, before she moved into a nursing home. It looks sort of like this:

coffee-grinder.jpg

Francesca has not used the grinder for anything, because the smell of her grandmother’s coffee inside brought back wonderful memories. But now, the aroma has faded. Francesca would like to clean the grinder — one can see the remains of what is very likely 15-year-old coffee inside — and begin to use it herself, to grind her own coffee beans.

Her question: How does one safely clean a coffee grinder made of metal and wood, in such a way that one can be sure it is hygienic, without ruining the wood?

3- THE BIG QUESTION: Anyone got interesting plans for the weekend?

Superfantastic Fattitude: Anya Sparks

Filed under: Superfantastic Fattitude,The Fat's in the Fire — Francesca @ 10:35 am

Francesca has been greatly enjoying old You Tube videos of entrants on Britain’s Got Talent and Britain’s Got More Talent.

To catch you up, here is superfantastic Big Girl Anya Sparks, proudly strutting her stuff and winning over the audience and two of the three judges at the auditions:

Francesca says: the fact that everyone loved her show except for Simon Cowell just goes to show you can never please everyone. Will you focus on the opinion of the one Simon or of the hundreds of people cheering for you? Here she is, in a better costume (perfect dress, so-so pants, terrible shoes) and with better hair, at the semi-finals:

The Big Question: If it wasn’t your fat, what was it?

Filed under: Superfantastic Fattitude,The Big Question — Francesca @ 10:25 am

Years ago, Francesca went on a blind date with a particular man who turned out to be smart, fun, and good-looking. We ate wonderful food at a romantic restaurant, and our conversation was even better than the food.

Then he didn’t call.

This being years ago, Francesca assumed that the man had been turned off by Francesca’s fat. Because isn’t that always the way? And this being years ago, Francesca was Not In A Good Place, and she called the man to find out why he didn’t want to go out again. She was, perhaps, a glutton for punishment as well as for excellent food (ha!).

Anyway, after all that time that Francesca had been down on herself for being Too Fat for this smart, fun, good-looking man, it turned out — he admitted this after swearing Francesca to secrecy — that he was an alcoholic, and this date was his first in years because he did not want to subject his problem on another person, and he realized after we met that he’d been kidding himself thinking he was ready to date again, and he was so sorry, and in fact he thought Francesca was beautiful.

You see? Not About the Fat.

Often, rejection by a man is about the Fat. However, sometimes, sometimes, it is really about something else. Perhaps he is depressed. Perhaps he has a girlfriend. Perhaps he only likes women with curly hair. Perhaps he has the flu. Perhaps he has a crush on someone and no one else measures up. Perhaps he’s an alcoholic.

Francesca wants to know: In cases wherein you were able to ascertain why you were being rejected by a man, what was it about, other than Your Fat?

O, O!

Look! The October issue of O Magazine has a feature on where to shop for larger sizes:

This image was taken from the website of our friends at Kiyonna.com, who are included in the feature. The blouse mentioned in O is available here.

Here is the cover:

The headline says: “YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE THIN to be gorgeous: The knockout clothes that prove it.”

Of course, they also have the obligatory diet ideas but still . . . Kudos to Oprah and her staff for being plus-size friendly. Keep it coming, with more, similar features and lots of plus-size models!

Be Superfantastic…On Your Own Terms

This has been a week of interesting synergy for me.

I’ve been watching commercials for the new season of Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style during my weekly Project Runway fix, the other day I was in my friendly local bookstore when I spotted a copy of Nina Garcia’s new book, The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own, and I keep running across references to What Not to Wear, How Do I Look? and all those other makeover shows.

I do consider Tim Gunn’s show (call me, Tim! I’ll bake scones!) several cuts above most makeover shows in that the person being made over is the one who makes the call, rather than being ambushed by her nearest and dearest, and is mostly given the tools to figure out how to choose clothes that will show her off to her best advantage. It does, however, have something in common with most of the others that I really dislike: the assumption that there are certain clothing pieces that every single woman must own, no matter what. Even if I were willing to allow someone to root through my underwear drawer, I’d still never call Tim for this purpose because I absolutely refuse to own a ‘little black dress’ or a trench coat, and those are the pieces the show will pay for me to have.

The concept behind the little black dress is actually fine. A relatively simple dress in a neutral color that can be worn in a pinch at a wide variety of functions is a nice thing to have. The problem is that everybody has concentrated so hard on little and black. I’m in no way a minimalist, and that includes with clothing. Black is…okay on me, but not particularly flattering. I don’t feel happy in little or in black, so if you combine them I’m going to disappear into a fashion funk that will suck the joy right out of me, and can easily take the room with it.

As for trench coats, well, put me in one and I’m a walking bad Humphrey Bogart joke.

Luckily, Tim has only ten things he requires of all women, most of which aren’t too bad once you look at the reasons behind and choose your own way to fill that need. Nina Garcia insists on a hundred! A quick flip through her book showed me that many of those one hundred things will never find closet or drawer space in my home. In all my life I’ve never been drawn to animal prints, and I didn’t care for bikinis when I was thin. Now that I have quite a prominent belly, I see no reason to suddenly take up a clothing style I’ve never been a fan of that will emphasize something I’d rather not make the Most Important Thing about me. Again, the little black dress (this time required to be an A-line, no less!) appears and insists on my owning it.

No more!
