‘Tis the Season for the Pinup Queen

Filed under: Tis the Season — Miss Plumcake @ 8:00 am

How To Be a Pinup Model – Release Your Inner Bombshell!– Hair, makeup and posing tutorials (just for fun!) from two gals who have made their careers in cheesecake.

Bonjour Roll-Up Skinny Jean – Get double duty out of these jeans. Keep them long and wear them with your knee-high boots (though NOT to a funeral!) or French cuff them into the classic pinup pant. Wear with heels and prepare to devastate.

Red and Black Lace Shaping Slip – How hot is this? So hot you’ll forget it’s shapewear.

Thick Strip Eyelashes – Any burlesque queen worth her pasties will tell you the MOST important cosmetic element of the pinup style is a nice thick set of false strip lashes. Go for a thick fringe of more or less uniform length. This might be the ONE time I’ll tell you to model yourself after Katy Perry, not Liza “spiderlashes” Minelli.

‘Tis the Season for the Animal Lover

Filed under: Tis the Season — Miss Plumcake @ 8:00 am

Lillibed Unbreakable Porcelain Bowl – Remember how I wrote a few days ago about not having stuff that you don’t just love? Well, that includes dog bowls. This one is lovely and –at least theoretically– unbreakable.

Waifs and Strays Document Capsule -I’m not much into animal faffery (except that time I put Dozer in an Hermès scarf because it was all sweaty and gross and I thought he’d enjoy it) but this is an unusual and elegant alternative to pet tags. The little inch-long leather and brass capsule holds your pet’s information. Actually, it’d be a pretty good little pill bottle for your own key chain.

Cece Kent Pet Carrier -If you’re doing to be one of Those People you might as well do it tastefully.

La Cinopelca Leather Short Lead – A good leather lead is worth its weight in gold. This is a quite short one, for when you’ve got your animal in your arms or an open-top carrier. However their longer leather leads (say that five times fast) are quality as well.

‘Tis the Season for the Bollywood Hopeful

Filed under: Accessories,Makeup,Movies,Perfume,Tis the Season — Miss Plumcake @ 8:00 am

Bollywood/Hollywood – My favorite English-language Bollywood film. Not that Monsoon Wedding isn’t great, but I love the tongue-in-cheek portrayal of the traditional Indian family and the plucky –not helpless with a thin veneer of pluck– heroine. If Frank Capra directed modern-day bollyflicks, I think you’d get something like this.

Guerlain Terracotta Kajal Intense Indian Kohl – You can’t do South Asian Glam without kohl eyeliner and lots of it. Unfortunately, applying loose kohl powder is challenging to even the most seasoned paint-slinger. The application itself isn’t that hard, but controlling the fall down (the bits of powder left on your cheek) is messy business. Guerlain, whose kohl products are excellent, makes a cream kohl with the incredible intensity of a powder and it’s safe for use on the waterline.

Sandalwood Amber Sheet Spray
– As a lover of perfume and all things fragrant it’s no wonder I’m drawn to Indian culture. Everything, from the food to the temples to the clothes to the bedroom, is heavily –often gloriously– scented. Keep a sachet of cardamom pods in your pillows and spray your sheets with sandalwood and you’ll drift off to sleep (or whatever else you do in bed) like an Indian queen.

Linden Earrings from Kendra Scott – More is always more. These earrings –glam but still wearable without looking costumey– are the most.

‘Tis the Season for the Fashion Maven

British Vogue – By far the best, sharpest journalism of its kind. It’s a spendy subscription, but worth every penny. Less fawning than American Vogue and less kiddie-porn than Paris Vogue, the UK version of the Conde Nast giant is my favorite fashion publication.

Yves Saint Laurent Tribute Sandals – The word iconic is overused, yet it’s justified with the YSL “Tribute” series. With new iterations released every season, still maintaining that sky-high heel and architectural platform, they’re destined to become the YSL signature wink for those in the know as much as the legendary Le Smoking.

Menswear Gold Watch – We’ve been seeing women wearing men’s over-sized watches for a few seasons now –wear it slightly loose, like a bangle– but mostly with round faces. I’m really feeling the louche good taste/bad taste 70’s feeling of a big chunky square face now. Think borrowing your grandfather’s (or father’s) Rolex, but not getting the links taken out.

Madame Grès: Sphinx of Fashion by Patrica Mears– Fashion isn’t stupid. It’s shallow, but it’s not stupid.  The history of why we wear what we wear is fascinating and real lovers of fashion know their history.  Sure any yahoo can recognize a Chanel jacket or might be able to tell you that Valentino is known for bows and its signature shade of red, but if you’re really interested in fashion, you’d do well to dig deeper. Madame Grès, described as the “couturier that time forgot”  by Linda Grant, is a fascinating study and although few know her name, anyone who has noticed those Grecian goddess dresses that’ve been ubiquitous on the red carpet for half a decade might be interested to know it was the reclusive Grès who brought that look to the forefront of modern fashion in the 1930’s.
